When choosing a new TV it can be a little confusing, you can get mesmerised by all different styles, sizes and features available. How can you pick between say an LCD and a Plasma TV for example?

LCDs are actually similar to computer monitors (also called TFT), which contain liquid filled crystals that sit between two thin plates of glass. LCDs work by showing the exact of light necessary to creating a colour to the user. When the TV signal hits the LCD panels, the crystals trasform to the required angle, restricting just the right amount of light to pass through creating the desired colour. Millions of crystals combined with a light behind the screen provides illumination to the LCD.

A Sharp LCD TV

Plasma TVs work by utilising an inert gas like xenon, and passing electric current through it from specialised cells called pixels. The current react with the gas making it glow. The correct distribution of current allows red, green and blue colour to be emulated perfectly, which is illuminated, again by a strong light.

Enough with the technical stuff.. Which TV is best for you?

Plasma screens have far better contrasts than LCD and as a result, show better, more vivid colours, but can lack image quality compared to the LCD. Plasma screen also have the added bonus of a wider viewing angle, so can be more effective in some situations.

An Acer Plasma TV

The LCD screens however are more energy efficient, using less voltage, and also have a longer “shelf life” than their Plasma counterparts. OVerall, this turns favour over to the LCD if you want best value for money or if you were planning on keeping the TV set for a long time. However, if you want either a very large TV, or you are wanting a higher colour quality and brightness your best bet is to go with the Plasma.
